The Allure of Simulation

Artificial Intelligence promises a cinematic future without limits. Entire cities can be built in seconds. Extras can be generated in endless crowds. Actors can be de-aged, resurrected, or replaced altogether. Even whole films can be simulated without a single camera rolling.

On the surface, this looks like liberation. No budgets to fight, no schedules to manage, no locations to secure. But cinema has never been about convenience. Cinema has always been about presence. And presence can’t be simulated.

The Weight of the Real

A simulated explosion might look more impressive than a practical one, but it doesn’t carry weight. An AI-generated face may be indistinguishable from a human’s, but it doesn’t carry history. A fabricated street scene may look authentic, but it doesn’t carry culture.

Simulation can mimic appearance. It cannot embody reality.

The camera, at its best, has always been a witness — to time, to place, to people. When film stops bearing witness and starts fabricating wholesale, it risks losing the very thing that made it powerful: its grounding in the real.

What Simulation Misses

  • Texture. The grain of film, the crack in a voice, the imperfect lighting that gives life to a scene.

  • Surprise. Accidents on set, improvisations by actors, the serendipity of collaboration.

  • Memory. A film shot in a city in 1962 carries the culture of that moment. A simulated city carries no memory — only prediction.

Cinema has always been more than what it shows. It’s about what it carries. And simulations carry nothing but code.

The Danger of Substitution

The danger isn’t that simulation exists — it’s that we begin to treat it as enough. If audiences consume fabricated performances as if they were lived, if studios replace testimony with trickery, cinema stops being culture’s witness and becomes only its echo.

Simulation is a tool. But it cannot be the foundation.

The Human Difference

Cinema is not powerful because it can trick us into believing what we see. It is powerful because it can remind us of what we’ve lived, what we’ve lost, and what we long for.

Looking Ahead

AI will keep getting better at simulation. The images will become sharper, the worlds more convincing. But the future of cinema will not be decided by how real simulation looks. It will be decided by how bravely filmmakers resist letting simulation replace witness.

Because cinema’s task has never been just to show us what’s possible. Its task has been to carry what’s real.
